Lincoln The Unknown

A story about the life of Abraham Lincoln.  Abraham Lincoln was one Dales mentors and life heroes.

  November 24, 1888 – November 1, 1955

Dale was born in Maryvale, Missouri and lived on a farm with his father James and mother Amanda. He knew the meaning of hard work living on a farm. His first job was selling correspondence courses to ranchers and later found a job at Armour & Co.

He soon became one of the most successful sales person in the company working in Nebraska.

After saving $500 he quit his job to become a Chautauqua lecture. He ended up instead becoming an actor and played the role of Dr. Hartley in a road show called Polly of the Circus.

When the production ended he was nearly broke and moved into the YMCA and got the idea of teaching about public speaking. By 1914 Dale was earning $500 a week which would be the equivalent of around $10,000 a week if he was teaching in the year 2005.

Dale died of Hodgkin's disease and Forest Hills New York.

This book has sold over 15 million copies and is part of self help history. The book was recommended to me by a multimillionaire and he recommended two books to everyone. The first book was Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill and of course this was the second.

I got the book on audio and have listened to it a few times. I think one of my favorite parts of the book was a story he told about a dinner party he went to.

Dale was sitting at a table with a friend of his and the few other people he had not met before. During the evening one of the men at the table started talking about a quote from the Bible and it was clear to Dale that the quote was from Hamlet a play written by Shakespeare.

He mentioned this to the man and soon there was an argument. Dales friends sitting at the table was very well read on Shakespeare so he asked his friend to verify the statement that he had just made. Just the opposite happened his friends said Ah come on Dale you know he's right.

Dale was shocked as the man kicked him under the table and gave him a nod. Dale knew not to create a scene at the table and that his friend would explain the situation later. As they were leaving that night he ask his friend why he didn't back him up.

Dale was about to learn a lesson he would never forget. The man told Dale that we were at his party and what would the purpose have been to make that man look like an idiot at his own party. Sometimes it's better to be happy than it is to be right.

I will never forget this story and have already used it often in my lifetime.

I highly recommend reading this book or listening to it on audio. You will not regret buying this book and keeping it around for a re read.
