January 13, 1832 – July 18, 1899
Horatio was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts and the son of a Unitarian
minister. Horatio's father tutored him until the age of 10 at home and
then later went to Gates Academy.
At the age of 16 he went to Harvard and studied under Henry Wadsworth
Longfellow with the intention of becoming a poet.
During his lifetime he wrote 135 dime novels about becoming rich in
America. These rags to riches stories illustrated how boys couldn't
treat the American dream through hard work.
There were charges of child abuse brought against him throughout his
lifetime. I cannot tell what exactly these charges were or why they were
dropped nor do I want to make any assumptions about the claims.
