James grew up in Birmingham, Alabama and as a young man he studied
Eastern philosophies. This might've seemed kind of strange for somebody
living in Alabama in the 50s.
He received a master's degree in counseling and spent more than 15 years
as a therapist. In 1989 he ended his career as a therapist and started
to write full time. His first book was the Celestin prophecy and was
self published in 1992.
The novel spent over three years on the New York Times bestseller list
and has sold over 20 million copies.
James and his wife are the founders of Global Prayer Project.
