October 2, 1869 – January 30, 1948
Mohandas was born in West India to his father Karamchand and mother
Putlibai. As a young child he was a vegetarian and often fasted. The
religion is mother studied was Jain and is deeply influenced his life.
At 13 years old he married a older woman, 14 year old Kasturbai Makhanji
and they went on to have five children with only four surviving
childhood.
When Mohandas was 19 he traveled to London to study as a barrister.
While in London he found a group of vegetarians that studied Buddhism
and Hinduism. This group persuaded him to read the Bhagavad Gita.
While in the company of these men he learned about other religions and
was exposed to modern day spiritual thinking. Reading these books would
influence his life enough to change the world.

He was assassinated while taking his nightly walk in New Delhi. The man
who assassinated him was considered an extremist Hindu Mahasabha and was
blaming Gandi for problems between Pakistan and India.
