Richard Alpert was born in Newton, Massachusetts to his father George
who was an influential lawyer in Boston. Richard had two other brothers.
He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Tufts University and his
Masters from Wesleyan University and his Ph.D. from Stanford University.
He soon received a permanent position at Harvard University where he
worked in the psychology department, graduate school of education
department, health service as a therapist and social relations
department.
Soon Richard found himself around people like
Aldous Huxley and Timothy Leary. He
was doing research with magic mushrooms and soon found himself kicked
out of Harvard for his overall conduct and continuing to give some of
the magic mushrooms to the undergraduates.
Disgusted with academia he often described it as feeling caught up in a
meaningless game.
In 1967 he traveled to India where he met Bhagavan Das and soon started
learning from him about mantras and other types of spirituality. It
wasn't long before he was given the name Ram Dass which means servant of
God.
Shortly after his travels to India he returned to the United States and
began spreading the word. His influence has changed the lives of many
people including Gay Hendricks.
