Tom grew up in Detroit, Michigan where his
father taught plumbing and his mom was a housewife. He attended a
Catholic school and spent a lot of time around the priests as well as
the nuns. This gave him an education he would never forget.
At the age of 13 he entered a prep seminary school in Chicago and became
a Servite which was a religious order founded in Italy during the
Medieval Times. In this school he spent time meditating and chanting and
lived a vow of poverty by choice.
After this he studied philosophy for a couple of years and returned back
home to Chicago to focus on his music but soon left the order.
He received a master's degree in theology from the University of Windsor
in Canada then continuing his education at Syracuse University received
a Ph.D. in religion.
From 1976 to 1992 he became involved with the Dallas Institute For
Humanities and Culture.
In 1992 he published The Care of the Soul and from then on was able to
pursue writing full time.
He has two children one boy and one girl.
